Evolution and Development of Flowers
How fundamental novelties of changes in body plans originate during evolution is still controversial. The Modern Synthesis theory explains how gradual processes by natural selection can be responsible for evolution. Homeotic mutants, however, that are able to establish stable populations in a natural environment, so-called “hopeful monsters”, prove that a saltatational mode of character change is a potential alternative mechanism for speciation. Homeosis is a result of changes in developmental genes. I investigate homeotic mutants in which different perianth whorls changed organ identity compared to the wildtypes. These morphological changes seem to be caused by a different expression of genes involved in floral development. Gene expression is investigated using RT PCR and in situ hybridisation techniques. Implications of gene duplication and subfunctionalization for the origin of major key innovations during plant evolution and co-evolution with functional groups of pollinators are also investigated.
