Research topics BSc/ MSc
This site highlights a number of possible MSc & BSc projects at the National Herbarium of the Netherlands, the natural history museum Naturalis, and the Hortus botanicus.
Building on their unique collections, the core scientific business of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands, the natural history museum Naturalis and the Hortus botanicus is generating, compiling and providing accessibility to systematic information, and to develop identification tools through large-scale flora and fauna projects by implementing electronic and web based systems. Closely linked to this, reconstructing and understanding the ‘Tree of Life’ (ToL) by comparing species and species distributions over time and space is at the heart of their research agenda, together with the geological context of evolutionary processes in past and present (the Platform of the ToL).
- Main research themes
1 Morphology, Evolutionary and developmental genetics
2 Phylogenomics and DNA bar-coding
3 Biogeography
4 Global Change BiologyThe overview presented here is certainly not exhaustive; there are many more subjects available. Both the content as well as the duration of the projects are flexible and can be adjusted to personal interests and wishes. Reporting takes the shape of a manuscript for publication in an international scientific journal.
MSc projects could include fieldwork. However, organizing fieldwork in the tropics needs much time to get sufficient funding, and the necessary visa and permits.
