Information for visitors

Rules and regulations

• The institute is open throughout the year during all working days from 8.00 till 18.00.

• The Herbarium is open to any visitor, professional or amateur, with a legitimate reason to consult the collections. The director assigns to each visitor a staff member to whom wishes can be expressed to see material and literature, to make photographs, receive prints, etc. Library facilities are provided by the librarian. Herbarium material, spirit material, carpologica etc. is made available by collection management staff. Visitors should be aware that for most families a certain amount of material not yet incorporated in the general collection is stored separately.

• Visitors are kindly requested to sign the visitor’s book, stating the purpose of their visit.

• Herbarium material must be handled with great care. It is not allowed to remove fragments without consulting the supervising staff member or collection management staff. Type specimens should be left intact in all cases.

• Visitors wishing to take photographs of specimens must obtain permission to do so. Images of specimens may be used for research. However, permission must be obtained to use such images for publication, or in any other way.

• Parts of the collections have been digitized. Digitized specimens are provided with barcodes. To keep the database a reliable one, it is absolutely necessary to update it with the latest identifications. That is why visitors are kindly requested not to make any alterations in the sequence of the boxes without consulting collection management staff.

• Visitors are not allowed to (re)insert material. Collection management staff will insert again all herbarium material taken out of the boxes.

• Names and notes must not be written on the covers, sheets, flimsies or packets, but on dated identification labels with the name of the investigator. One label for each newly identified collection. Printed labels can be provided for this purpose. Visitors are requested to inform collection management staff whether name changes are due to misidentifications, or to taxonomic or nomenclature alteration. Visitors locating unmarked type specimens are requested to attach type labels.

• If visitors want to borrow selected material subsequent to their visit, this material should be adequately marked as such and set aside, including flimsies and eventual covers. This material will be sent on loan upon the receipt of a written request that should be addressed to the chief collection manager.

• Visitors, who made use of our collections, are requested to acknowledge such in their publications. They are also asked to provide our library with a copy or reprint of such publications.

• Visitors are cordially invited to supply our institute with duplicate specimens of the groups in which they are working and/or on which they have performed fieldwork.
